Middelnederlandsch woordenboek
Describes the vocabulary of medieval Dutch from ca 1250 to 1550. It contains 60,000 entries (excl. 14,000 references) and has eleven volumes, of which the first appeared in 1885 and the last in 1941. It is alphabetically ordered. Owing to large spelling variations in medieval Dutch all entries are spelled according to a reconstructed ‘normalised' medieval Dutch. Users must be aware that words beginning with c are entered under k, if the c is pronounced as a k (e.g. confessie, costume); words beginning with z can be found under s (sac, so, seggen, sonde). Because of these and other spelling problems, an entry in modern spelling has been added to each lemma. All entries have citations to illustrate their meaning.
The Online MNW is part of the Geïntegreerde Taalbank, which also contains the Oudnederlands and Vroegmiddelnederlands Woordenboek, the Woordenboek der Nederlandsche Taal and the Woordenboek der Friese Taal.
